Sports medicine is a field of health care that only emerged in the late twentieth century, despite its prevalence in the world of sports. Practitioners of sports medicine are specialists called sports physician, and these physicians have long been in the field, being assigned to sports teams and such. Sports medicine or sport and exercise medicine are medication that have two functions. The first is to keep the body physically fit and in top notch condition. The second is to prevent injuries related to sports and treat these injuries if they do happen.
The scope of sports medicine is a wide one, but it mostly deals with the treatment of athletes and other similarly physically active individuals. It focuses mainly on musculoskeletal medicine, including musculoskeletal injuries. However, it also tackles performance medicine. Sports medicine is also an advocate of exercise medicine, which discourages physical inactivity as it leads to ill health. Aside from this, sports medicine covers public health as part of its promotion of physical activities such as exercise and sports.
Some common sports injuries include concussions, muscle cramps and strains, ankle sprains, and ACL tears. A concussion is a head injury that happens when the head receives a violent blow and the brain moves against the skull as a result. Muscle cramps, including leg cramps, are less serious. These are sudden, involuntary contractions of the muscles that can cause pain and difficulty in moving. On the other hand, muscle strains happen when the muscle is overstretched or torn because of overuse or improper use. An ankle sprain is the tearing of the ligaments in the ankle. The ACL in ACL tear stands for the anterior cruciate ligament, one of the main ligaments found in the knee, which can tear because of over-stretching.
These common sports injuries can be treated with AntiFlamme creams, Elastoplast and Nexcare Micropre strips, and Thermastrap stabilisers.
