Heartburn is a medical condition that is a pain that feels like a burning sensation. This is commonly felt in the heart area, behind the breastbone. It is normal to experience heartburn, but if it is felt on a regular basis it may be a sign of other complications such as an ulcer or other conditions that require medical attention. If heartburn occurs more than twice a week, it may be recommended to see a doctor.

Causes of heartburn

Heartburn is caused when stomach acid that should normally stay inside the stomach backs up into the esophagus. The stomach is lined with a substance that protects itself from the stomach acid, but the esophagus is not lined with the same substance. As a result of this, when the acid backs up into the esophagus the burning sensation is felt. This backing up of acid into the esophagus is usually caused when the sphincter dividing the stomach and esophagus weakens, allowing the stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus.

Treatment of heartburn

There are many medications that can be used to treat heartburn. Many of the medications work to reduce the production of stomach fluid, while others are antacids that work to neutralize the acid that flows into the esophagus.

Natural remedies for heartburn

One natural remedy to treat heartburn is to avoid eating overly spicy foods, as they tend to aggravate the production of stomach acid. Another is to drink aloe; it has been shown to help reduce inflammation, which can help to reduce heartburn. By drinking aloe, it can help to naturally reduce heartburn. Peppermint oil has also been found to help relieve the burning feeling of heartburn. It protects the esophageal lining from the acid. By lining the esophagus, it counteracts the acid from the stomach, helping to relieve heartburn.
