Acne is a skin condition known medically as acne vulgaris that can affect a person’s face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back. Acne comes to be when one’s hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. Acne is mostly common among teenagers particularly during the period of puberty. However, acne affects almost as much as one in every three people. It can happen to anyone regardless of age, sex, and race.

Acne can be triggered by a number of factors, the most prevalent of them being genetics as acne has a greater effect on those with more oil glands. Although nothing definite has been proven yet, studies suggest that a certain diet, that which includes plenty of dairy products and carbohydrate-rich foods like bagels and chips, can trigger bouts of acne. Other factors that may cause acne are stress and certain medications like corticosteroids and lithium. Contrary to popular belief, eating greasy foods doesn’t contribute to the growth of acne. Cosmetics also don’t worsen acne.

Acne can lead to pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nobules, and cysts. Pimples look like small red bumps with a white center. Blackheads happen when the pore becomes blocked with bacteria, aside from oil. Because blackheads are clearly visible, it looks like one has dirt on their face. Papules and pustules are similar to pimples, but papules are pink and pustules have pus at the top. Nobules are painful, large, and solid pimples. Last are cysts, which are also painful, but are filled with pus.

Although some may say that it is best to let acne run its course, acne should be treated if possible because it can affect one’s self-esteem. There are safe and effective acne medications available over-the-counter.
