The best fiber supplement, Benefiber contains the natural fiber wheat dextrin. It is sugar free, although it contains artificial sweeteners like sorbitol, a sugar alcohol the human body digests slowly. Benefiber without the artificial sweeteners is taste free. It dissolves in hold and cold beverages and soft foods, without affecting the taste and consistency. It does not thicken.

People are often confused as to why benefiber is labelled as gluten free although it has wheat dextrin as a listed ingredient. Firstly, benefiber used wheat dextrin instead of hydrolyzed guar gum, which is gluten free, because wheat dextrin contains a higher amount of fiber. Secondly, wheat dextrin is not wheat, but a starch derived from wheat. Lastly, benefiber is labelled as gluten free, because it contains less than ten parts per million or ppm of gluten. This small of an amount is only considered as a trace. The Food and Drug Administration is working on a law to propose that only products with less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten may be labelled as gluten free. Even in that case, benefiber can still be called gluten free.

The natural fiber wheat dextrin is used to treat incomplete or infrequent bowel movement and irritable colon medications. Like other fiber supplements, Benefiber can promote bowel health by bulking up the stool and helping it move through the intestines. To reduce chances of constipation, benefiber must be taken with sufficient fluid intake, which is at least eight glasses of water every day. Also, benefiber can be beneficial to people suffering from constipation because it can soften the stool. Aside from this, benefiber can even lower cholesterol.

Benefiber side effects are mild flatulence, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and feeling full in the stomach. Also, if you are on a low fiber diet, suddenly changing to a high fiber diet may lead to gas, bloating, and diarrhea. Start off with smaller amounts and gradually increase this amount.
