About Merino

Merino started decades ago in the year of 1980 as a small family-owned chemist shop in Whangamata, New Zealand. A pharmacist named Chris Martin was passionate about utilising lanolin, a substance naturally produced by a breed of sheep called merino sheep. Dr Martin wasn't only passionate about lanolin; he also wanted to help his local customers! Thanks to his scientific background, after many months of experimenting and researching, he finally perfected the secret recipe behind Merino Lanolin skin care.

Initially, these Merino Lanolin skin-care crèmes were made in a vat behind his home. However, the demand for the product grew and grew and the Merino skincare brand became more widely known. Before long, the family had to shift to a more modern manufacturing plant in Auckland, New Zealand. From its humble beginnings, Merino soon became a premier exporter, with customers from all over the world. To this day, Merino continues to provide effective, high quality skin care products for the natural way to enjoy beautiful and healthy skin!

The Merino company is an environmentally conscious company that uses only natural ingredients. Merino uses recyclable packaging for all of its products and the company is working towards achieving a carbon neutral status, by minimizing their carbon footprint. What are the benefits of Merino products?

The main component of Merino products is lanolin, nature's finest skin care ingredient. The Merino sheep, which can be found in New Zealand's South Island, produce this natural oil to protect their fine wool form environmental elements. In its pure and unprocessed form, it is a yellowish mixture that is also called wool wax or wool grease.

Lanolin is often used in cosmetic products, skin creams, and hair products like shampoo and conditioner. This is because it is known for its deep moisturizing effect and humectants properties. Lanolin is a lipid-rich emollient type of moisturizer and it is thicker and heavier than other moisturising agents. It is the animal oil that is closest in composition to the oil our own skin produces. Lanolin can be obtained without killing sheep.

Dry skin happens when the skin lacks lipids. This lack of lipids causes gaps to form, allowing the moisture in the skin to escape through those gaps. Because lanolin is lipid-rich, it forms an additional protective layer over the skin. This new layer prevents water from escaping, locking in moisture into the skin.

Lanolin is doubly effective as a moisturizer, because it also absorbs additional moisture from the surrounding air and into the skin. By keeping the skin moisturized and hydrated, the dry skin tissue becomes rejuvenated. Aside from this, lanolin can repel dirt and dust, keeping the skin clean and healthy.
