Worms are those tiny animals with bodies in the shape of a tube and no limbs. They can live underground and underwater. They can also live inside the bodies of other animals. But did you know that they can also live inside you? Anti-worm and de-worming medicines are formulated to kill these parasites. As a general rule, if one person in the household is infected, everyone has to be treated.
Parasitic worms, those that live inside and feed on the human body, are calledhelminths. These parasitic worms are also called intestinal worms, although they can be anywhere inside your body. There are three common parasitic worms that are responsible for worm infection: pinworms, roundworms, and tapeworms.
Symptoms of worm infection
The most common of them are pinworms, which often spreads when people unknowingly touch things that are contaminated with pinworm eggs and then put their fingers to their mouth. These eggs then hatch in the small intestine, and the worms may move to the vagina or the anus. Pinworms cause irritation, itching, and infection of the infected area, and may lead to loss of appetite and weight.
Roundworms spread the same way as pinworms, but they live in the intestines and are more common in tropical climates. Roundworm infections cause a variety of other medical conditions like ascariasis, loiasis, river blindness, and trichinosis. Ascariasis will cause coughing, abdominal pain along with diarrhea and blood in the stool, and fatigue. With loiasis, a person may see the worm moving across their eye. River blindness may lead to swollen lymph nodes and even vision loss.
Tapeworms live in the intestines of animals and one can get tapeworm infection from eating the undercooked meat of these infected animals. Tapeworm infection, similar to roundworm infection, will cause nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. But tapeworm infection can also lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
