Fever, which has a medical name of pyrexia, is a common condition where the body’s temperature is above the normal range. Although body temperature naturally changes throughout the day, going lower in the morning and going higher in the afternoon and evening, the normal range of temperature is between 37.5 and 38.3 °C or 99.5 and 100.9 °F. Normal fevers usually don’t go higher than 41 to 42 °C or 105.8 to 107.6 °F. Fever occurs in the part of the brain called hypothalamus, which is primarily concerned with the pituitary gland and the endocrine system. This hypothalamus is the one responsible for altering the temperature and causing it to rise.

Fever can be caused by a number of different reasons, the most common of which is bacterial infection. This bacterial infection can be accompanied by strep throat, flu, chickenpox, or pneumonia. Aside from bacterial infection, fever can also be caused by viral infections. Other causes include heat exhaustion, extreme sunburn, and certain inflammatory conditions. There are even some medications like antibiotics and drugs for high blood pressure or seizure that can cause fevers. Despite all of these, there are times when the cause of fever cannot be identified.

Fever can be treated using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs, which work by bringing the temperature down and relieving uncomfortable symptoms. Generic medications include acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirins. Natural home remedies for fever can be tea made from herbs like yarrow, elderflower, and ginger. Those suffering from fever should remember to increase their fluid intake and dress warmly. Furthermore, they should take a bath in lukewarm water to bring their temperature down or give themselves a sponge bath, particularly in their high-heat areas like the groin and the armpits. They can also place cold washcloths on their forehead or nape.
