The adrenal glands play a crucial role in the endocrine system, secreting hormones that regulate stress response, metabolism, and immune function. With chronic stress, it is often not that the adrenal glands stops producing cortisol, but that a resistance to stress signals (cytokines, interleukins, blood sugar and cortisol), occurs at the hypothalamic level, reducing CRH output, which will reduce ACTH signaling and subsequently diminish adrenal cortisol production.
