Its health action and function:
Fish oils are a viable source of essential fatty acids like omega-3s. Each cell in the body is enveloped by a cellular membrane composed of phospholipids which contain essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids regulate the entry and exit of substances that go in and out of the cell. The fluidity and structure of the cellular membrane depends on the phospholipid it has.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are better compared to saturated fat or trans-fatty acids when it comes to forming phospholipids that make up cellular membranes. Healthy cellular membranes maintain optimal passage of nutrients and electrolytes in the cell, as well as supporting cellular communication via receptors or hormones.
Omega-3 fatty acids also make up prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which primarily function in immune response. Additionally, these substances are needed for maintaining function of the smooth muscles, stimulating clumping of platelets and initiating inflammation in response to wound healing. Fish oils rich with omega-3 fatty acids deliver a more effective anti-inflammatory action unlike other fatty acid types.
