The New Zealand Ministry of Health and Auckland University have released an alarming new health report stating that 11,000 deaths per year could be avoided, simply by improving diet and lifestyle factors. Those taking statins had a 30.9 percent reduction.

Supplementation of plant sterols may be an option in lowering cholesterol for those who prefer not to take cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins.
