Burns and Scars

A burn is a type of damage to the tissue or flesh that happens when the skin is exposed to heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight, friction, and radiation. There are three degrees of burns: (1) with first degree burns, only the topmost layer of the skin or the epidermis is damaged, (2) second degree burns are those that reach the layer underneath, called the dermis, (3) third degree burns, the worst of them, damages all the layers of the skin.

Burns and Scars information

A burn is a type of damage to the tissue or flesh that happens when the skin is exposed to heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight, friction, and radiation. There are three degrees of burns: (1) with first degree burns, only the topmost layer of the skin or the epidermis is damaged, (2) second degree burns are those that reach the layer underneath, called the dermis, (3) third degree burns, the worst of them, damages all the layers of the skin. Because it affects the skin, which is the body's first protective layer, burns may lead to bacterial infections. Furthermore, burns cause the formation of scars, which is part of the body's natural healing process. However, scars will also form when the body suffers any sort of trauma, whether as a result of injury or surgery. The appearance of scars changes depending on the type of wound one suffered.

Burns and Scars First Aid

If one gets a minor burn, one should immediately hold the area under cool running water to soothe the pain. Burns cause the skin to swell and develop blisters, but one shouldn't break these blisters, if possible. If the blisters do break, clean the area with mild soap and water and disinfect it. For major burns, one should elevate the burned area and cover it with a clean, moist cloth.

Burns and Scars Treatment

To soothe the burn, one can use gel products containing ingredients like aloe vera. Topical antibiotic ointments, which can normally be bought over the counter, may also be applied to the burn for disinfect. One can choose to take pain relievers. For the scars, one can use cream products that make the scar less visible against the skin. To remove the scar, one can have steroid injections or use silicone sheets. Both of these will flatten the scar.
