What is Maunuka Honey anyway?
Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand from two plants, both of which are from time to time called manuka. The most common honey source of these is Leptospermumscoparium, and of the two, is the most commonly called manuka. The other is Kunzea ericoides (but formerly known as Leptospermum ericoides) and is called manuka and kanuka, with kanuka being the more common usage. The Leptospermums are a genus comprising around 50 species that is widely spread throughout the South West corner of the Pacific.
Both the manuka and kanuka plants have historically been used by Maori and early European settlers for medicinal purposes. These includes use of the bark as a poultice, for colds, for flu, and stomach aches. Both plants are called "tea tree" from the practice of making a tea from the leaves.
Benefits of Manuka Honey:
Honey has been used for medical purposes by the ancient Egyptians for thousands of years. However, with the advent of antibiotics, most people began to regard honey as merely a home remedy. Recent studies are now indicating that a special type of honey only found in the New Zealand region called, "Manuka Honey" actually has more healing properties than antibiotics and has been effective in treating antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. This is a major breakthrough in the medical industry as Manuka Honey is now being recognized by medical professionals as an viable alternative to conventional forms of medicine.

1. Only active Manuka honey provides non-hydrogen peroxide antibacterial components.
2. The Manuka antibacterial factor is unaffected by enzymes in the body that destroy hydrogen peroxide components.
3. The Manuka antibacterial factor is highly effective against antibiotic resistant "superbugs."
4. The Manuka antibacterial component maintains its potency even when diluted over 50 times as will happen when used on, or in, the body.
5. The Manuka antibacterial factor is unaffected by heat, light, or time.
6. The Manuka antibacterial factor may be used full strength and covered. It does not require moisture or oxygen to be effective, as do other honeys.
