Ingredients
Novalac Anti-Diarrhoea contains electrolytes for rehydration, glucose and fructose for feeding and has low osmolarity.
Purpose/Usage The effects of diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is often a temporary problem caused by a bacterial or viral infection. It can also be a side effect of medications or a sensitivity to food.
Osmotic diarrhoea can result from the infant being overfed and not digesting its food properly.
Diarrhoea, with loose watery stools occurring more than 3 or 4 times a day, can cause rapid dehydration in infants, with loss of valuable electrolytes. If not treated promptly, it can lead to serious health problems.
Dehydrated babies lose energy and become lethargic and can develop secondary lactose and sucrose intolerances.
Diarrhoea can also result in damage to the intestinal lining, which can lead to poor absorption of nutrients, in particular carbohydrates and fats.
Dehydrated babies also have an increased risk of developing allergies as the intestinal barrier can become impaired, allowing proteins and peptides to enter the system.
Loss of appetite can be the greatest challenge for rehydrating the infant.
How Novalac Anti-Diarrhoea helps
Novalac Anti-Diarrhoea is a special rehydrating formula. Unlike simple electrolyte fluids, it rehydrates and feeds simultaneously. It is bananna and apple flavoured to encourage feeding in infants who are off their food.
It contains a high concentration of electrolytes to replace those lost through diarrhoea and has low osmolarity so water is not drawn into the digestive system.
It is very low in lactose and sucrose-free to avoid secondary intolerance and is also free of ߭lactoglobulin, gluten and soy protein. It is highly digestible, containing readily-absorbed glucose and fructose, high casein levels, dietry fibres and cream of rice.
Novalac Anti-Diarrhoea is easily digested and is designed for short-term feeding. When diarrhoea improves the infant should be switched to another Novalac formula.
