NFS Folic Acid profile:
Folic Acid is a water-soluble B vitamin which your body requires daily.
Folic Acid is sourced from food and supplements. It is hard to get
enough Folic Acid every day through food alone, which is why all women
of childbearing age are encouraged to take a daily Folic Acid supplement
as part of a healthy diet.
Folic Acid helps a baby's neural tube (the part
of a developing baby that becomes the brain and spinal cord) develop
properly. Low levels of Folic Acid are strongly linked with an increased
risk of neural tube defects. Folic Acid works, but it only works if taken
before and during the first few weeks of pregnancy, when the neural
tube is developing into the brain and spinal cord.
Precautions
Always read the label. Take only as directed.
MEDICINE INTERACTIONS:Co-trimoxazole, sulphasalazine, phenytoin, phenobarbital,
primidone and methotrexate may decrease the efficacy of
Folic Acid supplements
Toxicity: Folic Acid has no known toxic level. If you ate a bowl
of fully fortified cereal (300 micrograms), took a Folic Acid
supplement (300 micrograms), and ate fortified foods and foods
rich in folate, you would not get too much Folic Acid. Even in
very high amounts, Folic Acid is non-toxic.
