Purpose/Usage
The liver in the major area for the processing of toxins (substances that can be potentially harmful). These toxins may enter the body from the outside or be formed as part of the body?s metabolic processes, in either caase, they find their way to the liver through the bloodstream . The aim of detoxification is to change a potentially harmful compound in such as way that it may be made less harmful, and be excreted by the body through the kidneys or the intestinal system.
Detoxification occurs in two phases. During Phase 1, the liver changes the original toxic molecule through chemical processes into a highly reactive molecule that is ready for processing by the Phase 2 system. The intermediate molecule resulting from Phase 1 activity is usually highly reactive and more toxic than the original molecule. This process is mediated by the p450 cytochrome enzyme pathway and is dependent on essential nutrients such as B Vitamins, Vitamin C and iron to function correctly.
During Phase 2, other substances are added to these intermediate molecules to inactivate them so that they can be safely excreted by the body. These conjugation reactions require the presence of amino acids such as glutathione, glutamine and cysteine, the minerals magnesium and selenium, and B Vitamins.
If either of these two phases are not functioning correctly, toxic metabolites may spill back into the bloodstream and deposit at sites around the body. In addition, malfunctioning of this system may lead to disruptions in digestive capacity and intestinal permeability i.e. movement of toxins and allergens through the gastrointestinal mucosa into the bloodstream, which may cause free radical damage in tissues and may lead to chronic health problems. Natural ways in which an individual can maintain liver health include:
Diet - The liver responds rapidly to the withdrawal of addictive substances like coffee, tea, alcohol and refined carbohydrates. One may stimulate liver detoxification by stopping these substances for 3 to 6 days and selecting for an eating plan rich in vegetables (especially cruciferous and orange vegetables.
Hydration - Deficient water intake may reduce the rate of toxin elimination especially through the kidneys and perspiration. Maintain an adequate intake of water daily i.e. minimum of 5 glasses.
