Purpose/Usage
In nature there are over 600 kinds of carotenoids, mostly found in colourful vegetables and fruits. The most common ones are alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, cryptoxanthin, lutein, lycopene and zeaxanthin. Of these, beta-carotene is well recognised as a major source of Vitamin A and as an antioxidant nutrient. Scientific research is finding new potential health benefits for the carotenoid family.
Beta-carotene and other carotenoids are able to scavenge free radicals and quench singlet oxygen, which cause damage to cells. They also facilitate normal cell to cell communication.
The latest research shows that high intakes of carotenoids may help to reduce the risk of some cancers, particularly prostate and the spread of breast cancer cells.
Our immune function declines with age. This decline may be reduced with a regular intake of carotenoid anti oxidants. Studies on heart disease show that free radicals are implicated in atherosclerosis and that taking beta-carotene can reduce the risk of heart attacks by up to forty percent.
A Cornell University study suggests that antioxidants are linked to improved respiratory function and may help to prevent respiratory diseases such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis. Recent research into eye conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) show that carotenoids protect against free radical damage to the proteins in the lens of the eye.
Another study showed that lutein and zeaxanthin showed strong protection against AMD.
New research into sun protection strongly supports the internal use of mixed carotenoids. Carotenoids protect skin from free radicals generated by UV rays in sunlight. In a German study, healthy people taking a natural mixed carotenoid supplement gained protection against sunburn.
Mixed carotenoids, combined with a topical sunscreen are recommended to protect the skin and decrease the risk of sunburn.
Therapeutic doses of natural mixed carotenoids of 25- 50mg per day are most often used in trials with no adverse effects.
Thompsons Super Carotene Complete is a natural, plant-based multi-carotene supplement, rich in beta-carotene and five other important antioxidants which protect the body against cellular damage.
Carotenoids may reduce the risk of some cancers, particularly prostate and the spread of breast cancer cells. Carotenoid supplements may prove useful in preventing immune system dysfunction and the development of heart disease.
People suffering from respiratory conditions such as exercise induced asthma and eye conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration may also benefit from taking carotenoids. These antioxidant nutrients also help reduce sensitivity to UV light and the risk of sunburn. Carotenoids are safe to use during pregnancy and lactation.
Medicines have benefits and some may have risks. Always read the label
